Introduction: Sustainability of Development Financing
Multilateral Issues and Perspectives
Multilateral framework is generally regarded as a more humane approach of channelling external development funds to developing countries. This is because there is likely to be economies of scale (and perhaps economies of scope as well) when a particular multilateral entity handles the financial ‘intermediation’. Furthermore, the self-interests of donor countries are less likely to influence decisions regarding which recipient country gets what and when. Thus, the demands for enhancing donor support to multilateral aid institutions, both quality and quantity-wise, as well as improving the effectiveness of these institutions themselves are justified. These issues are addressed in the eight
papers presented in this journal.
