Amina Ebrahim presents at the UNCTAD workshop on illicit financial flows
On 6 February 2025, UNU-WIDER Research Fellow Amina Ebrahim presents at the joint measurement and policy workshop on illicit financial flows (IFFs) in Geneva, Switzerland. The workshop is organized by UNCTAD Division for Africa, Least Developed Countries and Special Programmes, in partnership with the UNCTAD Statistics Service.
This workshop is part of an UNCTAD project that explores statistical measurement of tax and commercial IFFs to enable more targeted policy action. Currently, the project works with Ghana, Namibia, and Zambia to apply shared standardized methodologies and tools for improved domestic resource management.
During the workshop, Ebrahim presents UNU-WIDER's work, focusing on how data can be used as a tool to create effective policies and help identify potential IFFs. UNU-WIDER has provided a four-point policy recommendation to overcome challenges related to IFFs. Ebrahim presents these policy recommendations as well as the Government Revenue Dataset, which is hosted by UNU-WIDER and can also provide the necessary data to help identify discrepancies and potential IFFs.
