What lessons can be learnt from developed countries that might be useful for developing and emerging economies? With an emphasis on long-term growth and human development, the panel will dissect accounts of the development strategies of a select set of both advanced economies and successful developing countries which, although country- and context-specific, could provide useful lessons for other developing countries and emerging economies. Focus will be on orthodox versus heterodox policies; the importance of capability, primary exports, diversification and financing; managing diversity; the role of institutions and governance; and human development.

The in-depth research findings are presented in two books published by Oxford University Press, 2013, Development Success: Historical Accounts from More Advanced Countries, and Achieving Development Success: Strategies and Lessons from the Developing World, both edited by Augustin Kwasi Fosu.
