Exploring Localized Impacts of Mining: SA-TIED Paper Presented at the Irish Economics Association Conference

Carol Newman who serves as co-academic lead for SA-TIED´s Workstream 1 on Enterprise development for job creation and growth, presented her paper titled "Spillovers from extractive industries" at the Irish Economics Association conference held in Athlone, Ireland on May 4th and 5th, 2023. The presentation focused on the mining sector in South Africa and the localized impacts of mining within the context of the Just Energy Transition. The research, conducted as part of the SA-TIED programme, utilized tax administrative data to examine the effects of contractions and expansions in mining on profitability, mark-ups, and physical productivity. By disaggregating the findings by green and non-green sectors, the study contributed valuable insights to the policy debate surrounding the Just Energy Transition.

Carol Newman, a Professor in Economics at the Department of Economics, Trinity College Dublin and a Non-resident Senior Research Fellow with UNU-WIDER, co-authored the paper with Michael Kilumelume (UNU-WIDER), Bruno Morando (Maynooth University), and John Rand (University of Copenhagen). Newman is an applied microeconomist specializing in analyzing household and enterprise behavior in developing countries. Her expertise and research contributions have made her a renowned figure in the field.
