Linkages between Special Economic Zone investments and the local economy

UONGOZI Institute in collaboration with the Tanzanian Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA) and United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) convened a policy dialogue on 19 June 2021, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The purpose of the dialogue was to discuss ways that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Local Government Authorities (LGAs) can maximise opportunities associated with Special Economic Zone (SEZ) investments.

Specifically, the event:

• Shared knowledge about the type of business activities and investments undertaken in the SEZ schemes
• Explored potential and existing opportunities associated with SEZ investments
• Discussed challenges that debilitate linkages between SEZ investments and the local economy

The information shared in the event is based on research conducted under the collaborative research project between UONGOZI Institute and UNU-WIDER. The recommendations from the dialogue will enrich the framework and modalities to promote SMEs for socio-economic growth in Tanzania and the region. See the Policy brief given out in the event.

The dialogue was officiated by the Tanzanian Minister for Industry and Trade, Hon. Prof. Kitila Mkumbo (MP). The event was attended by 80 participants, including representatives from government ministries, departments and agencies; LGAs; SMEs; private sector; and research and academic institutions.
