MOZMOD training and retreat 2024
This event is organized by UNU-WIDER in collaboration with the national MOZMOD team, the International Labour Organization (ILO) Mozambique, and the Ministry of Economic and Finance (MEF) of Mozambique.
The MOZMOD Training and Retreat 2024 targets both new and existing MOZMOD users. Participants include government officials, university representatives, and researchers from stakeholder institutions such as the National Institute of Social Security (INPS), Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Action (MGCAS), National Institute for Social Action (INAS), National Institute of Statistics (INE), and Ministry of Labor, as well as those with previous MOZMOD training experience.
The retreat aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of MOZMOD, a tax-benefit microsimulation tool developed specifically for Mozambique. Through in-depth training, participants will learn how to use MOZMOD to analyze the effects of public policies, such as taxes and monetary transfers, on poverty, inequality, and fiscal balance. The goal is to empower policymakers and researchers to conduct policy analyses using MOZMOD, equipping them to answer relevant questions in their fields.
The event includes a series of practical sessions, where participants will apply MOZMOD’s functionalities to their own policy contexts and begin drafting policy briefs. This capacity-building initiative seeks to strengthen local ownership of MOZMOD by involving Mozambique’s National Team in organizing and delivering the sessions. The retreat will serve as a forum for MOZMOD users to share knowledge, build a community of practice, and foster collaboration across various institutions.
MOZMOD is a tax-benefit microsimulation model that applies user-defined tax and benefit policies to microdata on households. Developed by UNU-WIDER in collaboration with the MEF of Mozambique and SASPRI, and supported by ILO Mozambique, MOZMOD has become an essential tool for evaluating the impact of public policy on household incomes, poverty, inequality, and government revenues. Since its inception in 2015, MOZMOD has been regularly updated and refined through training and retreats, supported by the Inclusive Growth in Mozambique team and the SOUTHMOD project.
This event is part of the SOUTHMOD project, a key initiative within UNU-WIDER’s Domestic Revenue Mobilization programme and its research and capacity development program, funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad).
