Patricia Justino presents at a UN General Assembly side event

Mon, 23 September 2024

World Bank and Brazil's G20 Presidency host a side event in New York on 23 September 2024 during the UN General Assembly High-level Week. The event gathers ministerial-level participants to discuss pathways to advance on the goal of eradicating poverty and boosting shared prosperity on a livable planet amid polycrisis. UNU-WIDER Deputy Director Patricia Justino is one of the panelists at the event.

Patricia Justino's remarks focus on the pattern of extreme poverty concentration in conflict-affected countries. Despite comprising just 6% of the global population, Fragile or Conflict-affected States (FCS) are home to almost half of the world's extremely poor individuals, 80% by 2030. This pattern is likely to drive further apart countries able to enact development policies that improve the lives of their citizens, and countries unable to break away from vicious cycles of poverty and violence. Eradicating extreme poverty will equal tackling the multiple challenges that hinder development in FCS.

Programme

The opening remarks at the event are given by the World Bank Senior Managing Director Axel van Trotsenburg and the Minister of Social Development and Assistance, Family, and the Fight against Hunger of Brazil Wellington Dias. The Global Director of World Bank's Poverty and Equity Practice Luis Felipe Lopez Calva gives a presentation on the topic of the event.

The presentation is followed by a panel. The panelists include Secretary-General of UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Rebeca Grynspan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Central African Republic Sylvie Baïpo-Temon, Wellington Dias, Patricia Justino, and the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Achim Steiner.
