CEEG seminar on economic recession in Mozambique draws local media attention

On 23 February 2022, the Jornal de Comunidade of the University of Eduardo Mondlane covered a seminar organized by the Inclusive growth in Mozambique programme discussing a paper on the current economic crisis in Mozambique.

The paper was presented at one of the sessions of the CEEG Seminar Series by Michael Sambo, researcher at IESE. Entitled ‘The economic recession in Mozambique: Was it COVID-19? – A look from the external sector’, the study suggests that the current economic crisis in Mozambique does not result only from the effects of the outbreak of COVID-19 on the economy, but rather that the pandemic precipitated a pre-existing crisis.

The reportage of Jornal da Comunidade highlighted the key findings of the report, according to which the economic growth rates in Mozambique were declining already in 2019, well before the first reported case of COVID-19 in Mozambique.
