Eva-Maria Egger discusses impact of COVID-19 in Mozambique at UNDP Africa economic advisor meeting

On 18 April 2022, Eva-Maria Egger, UNU-WIDER Research Fellow and Resident Advisor of the Inclusive growth in Mozambique (IGM) programme based at the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) of Mozambique, joined an internal UNDP seminar as discussant.

Organized by the UNDP Regional Coordinator for Africa, the event gathered altogether 20 economic advisors from UNDP country offices in Africa to discuss the results of the joint MEF-UNDP report The Socioeconomic Impact of COVID-19 on the Urban Informal Economy in Mozambique, to which the IGM resident advisors had contributed.

The report was presented by Alex Warren-Rodriguez, Senior Economist at UNDP Mozambique. His presentation was followed by three commentators, including Eva-Maria Egger.

In her discussion, the IGM Resident Advisor highlighted the contribution of the IGM programme to the COVID-19 response in Mozambique and referred to the related studies, including The macroeconomic impact of COVID-19 in Mozambique. When discussing the COVID-19 impact mitigation measures, Eva-Maria Egger highlighted in particular the need to design shock-responsive social protection and/or business support systems.
