Michael Keller discusses sustainable management of natural resources at IMD conference 2022
The Institute for Multiparty Democracy (IMD), in partnership with the Ministry of Land and Environment (Ministério de Terra e Ambiente, MTA) and the National Petroleum Institute (Instituto Nacional de Petróleo, INP-MIREME), organized an international conference on sustainable management of natural resources and the environment in the context of climate change, 24–25 November 2022 in Maputo, Mozambique.
Entitled ‘Sustainable Management of Natural Resources in Building Resilience to Climate Change: For a Participatory and Sustainable Management of Natural Resources in favour of Climate Resilience’, the event aimed to promote a space for mutual dialogue and joint reflection on the best approaches towards a participatory and sustainable management of natural resources in favour of climate resilience.
Michael Keller, Research Fellow at the Inclusive growth in Mozambique programme (IGM), was invited to contribute to Panel 3 discussing sustainable natural resource management practices with a focus on best practices, experiences and lessons learned from the extractive industry in the context of climate change. His presentation focused on the existing mechanisms to protect the environment around mining projects and on how to ensure their implementation. It was based on his work as specialist in macroeconomics and natural resources based at the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Mozambique.
The conference participants included members of parliament from Mozambique and Finland and members of provincial assemblies, as well as representatives of governmental institutions, development partners, local academics, experts, civil society organizations and the private sector.
