Ministry of Economy and Finance trains social sectors in MOZMOD

A six-day MOZMOD retreat, organized in partnership between the National Directorate of Economic and Development Policies (DNPED) of the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Mozambique, UNU-WIDER, the Southern Africa for Social Policy Research Insights (SASPRI) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), took place in Macaneta, Maputo Province, on 6-11 June 2021.

The retreat was aimed at the end-users of MOZMOD, a tax-benefit microsimulation model, at sectorial ministries and government institutions with the main objective being to discuss and simulate selected tax reform and social benefit policies using the MOZMOD model, and to initiate the production of a series of policy briefs based on the analysis.

Speaking at the opening of the event, Enilde Sarmento, Director of DNPED, referred to MOZMOD as a ‘highly versatile and easy-to-use tool for both policy makers and researchers’ and highlighted it as an opportunity for Mozambique to better plan fiscal and social policy reforms.

The retreat participants included technicians from the Tax Authority of Mozambique, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Action (MGCAS), the National Institute of Social Action (INAS), the National Institute of Statistics (INE) and the National Institute of Social Security (INSS).

MOZMOD has been developed as part of the UNU-WIDER SOUTHMOD project and receives support from the Inclusive growth in Mozambique programme.
