Shaping our future together – UNU-WIDER celebrates United Nations' 75th anniversary

The year 2020 marks a special anniversary for the United Nations: 75 years from the signing of the UN Charter in San Francisco. UNU-WIDER will take part in the commemoration of the anniversary both globally and in collaboration with other UN agencies in Finland. The UN week on 19–26 October will include several events, a collaborative video message, and possibilities for participation.

As part of UNU-WIDER's celebrations, the WIDER Annual Lecture will focus on  the future of the UN. In the online lecture on 26 October, Lord Mark Malloch‐Brown will discuss whether the UN can reinvent itself and form new alliances at a time when nationalistic governments across the world threaten the values upon which the UN was built.

UNU-WIDER will also join other UN organizations and affiliates present in Finland to mark UN Day and the anniversary. A video compiled by the One UN Finland co-ordination group shows how we are shaping the future together.

‘This year is special for us, as we celebrate 75 years of the United Nations, 35 years of UNU-WIDER, and 45 years of the United Nations University. Our accomplishments this year include the reorientation of our knowledge creation and sharing to find solutions for building back better amidst and after the pandemic. Supporting developing countries is our mission and contribution as part of the United Nations, and a requirement to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and a better future for us all’, says Kunal Sen, Director of UNU-WIDER.
