Growth, employment, and poverty in Latin America © Oxford University PressThis session will showcase current research about distributional change in middle-income countries.

Gary Fields will draw upon UNU-WIDER research on Latin America in his presentation that will focus on changes in labour market outcomes and the links between poverty, inequality, and growth in the region. Carlos Rodriguez Castelan will add further to this discussion in his presentation centered on the dynamics of labor income inequality in Latin America. Haroon Bhorat will add an additional perspective to this discussion when he dissects the ‘Missing Middle’ in the case of South Africa in his presentation.

Across the presentations, the session will focus on how current knowledge may inform future challenges and identify promising new research avenues.

Gary S. Fields is the John P. Windmuller Professor of International and Comparative Labour and Professor of Economics at Cornell University. He has been an Ivy League teacher and professor for more than forty years. He teaches and conducts research in labour economics, development economics, and public policy. He is the 2014 winner of the IZA Prize in Labor Economics, the top world-wide award in the field; co-directs the IZA Program on Labor and Development; and is a WIDER Non-Resident Senior Research Fellow.

Carlos Rodriguez Castelan  | Presenter | Presentation

Carlos Rodríguez-Castelán is a lead economist in the World Bank’s Poverty and Equity Global Practice. Previously, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Brookings, and held short-term research positions at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and UN-ECLAC. He also worked for the Government of Mexico. His research focuses on growth, productivity and inequality analysis, efficiency and equity effects of market failures, impact evaluation of fiscal and social policies, and vulnerability to shocks.

Haroon Bhorat | Presenter | Presentation

Haroon Bhorat is Professor of Economics and Director of the Development Policy Research Unit at the University of Cape Town. He’s co-authored two books and published over 150 academic journal articles, book chapters and working papers. He is a Non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, a member of the World Bank’s Commission on Global Poverty, and a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labour.

Kunal Sen | Discussant | Presentation

Kunal Sen, the UNU-WIDER Director Designate, is Professor of Development Economics at the Global Development Institute, University of Manchester, and Joint Research Director for the Effective States and Inclusive Development Research Centre. Professor Sen has substantial experience directing and managing global research consortia, and has served in advisory roles with national governments and bilateral and multilateral development agencies, including the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).
