UNU-WIDER at the LDC5 Conference

On 5–9 March 2023, world leaders, parliamentarians, CSOs, the private sector, and youth representatives gather in Doha, Qatar, to the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDCs). The conference discusses how to help LDCs graduate from the category and reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNU-WIDER contributes to the conference by presenting its research and capacity development collaboration in LDCs through an exhibition and a side event.
The conference features plenary sessions, high-level thematic roundtables, and a series of parallel and side events on various thematic priorities of the Doha Programme of Action (DPoA).
Side event
UNU-WIDER, in collaboration with the OECD Development Centre and FERDI, organizes a side event Addressing vulnerabilities through production transformation – Launch of the LDC5 Monitor on Thursday, 9 March 2023 at 12:15–13:45 (UTC+3). The side event takes place at room 105 of the Qatar National Convention Centre.
Exhibition
UNU-WIDER is also present at the exhibition section of the conference. At our exhibition booth we share examples of a research institution and UN think tank partnering with LDCs to support the graduation of the countries. The exhibition combines photo, video, and infographic material with our research results from LDCs.

About the conference
The Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) is a once-in-a-decade opportunity to accelerate sustainable development in the places where international assistance is needed the most — and to tap the full potential of the LDCs* to help them make progress on the road to prosperity.
The LDC5 Conference in Doha gathers world leaders, the private sector, civil society, parliamentarians, and young people to discuss and share new ideas, mobilize additional funds, and stimulate the delivery of the commitments agreed through the Doha Programme of Action. Specific initiatives and concrete deliverables that address LDC-specific challenges are expected to be announced during the conference.

*About the LDC category
Least developed countries (LDCs) are low-income countries confronting severe structural impediments to sustainable development. They are highly vulnerable to economic and environmental shocks and have low levels of human assets. There are currently 46 countries on the list of LDCs which is reviewed every three years by the Committee for Development (CDP). LDCs have exclusive access to certain international support measures in particular in the areas of development assistance and trade. Further information (UN-DESA)
