Report
Agricultural development in Mozambique
Trends, challenges, and opportunities
This report examines the trends, challenges, and opportunities in Mozambique’s agricultural sector from 2002 to 2020, with a particular emphasis on smallholder farming. It is based on a novel dataset produced under the Inclusive growth in Mozambique (IGM) programme compiling 11 agricultural surveys conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADER) between 2002 and 2020.
The primary objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive assessment of Mozambique’s agricultural development over the past two decades, identifying key constraints and evaluating policy interventions aimed at improving productivity and resilience. The results highlight the ongoing need to prioritize smallholder farmers and address policy implementation challenges to achieve sustainable development of the agricultural sector.
The IGM programme is a research and capacity development programme implemented in partnership between the National Directorate of Economic and Development Policies (DNPED) of the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Mozambique (MEF) and the Centre for Economic and Management Studies (CEEG) of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Eduardo Mondlane (UEM), with technical support from the Development Economics Research Group of the University of Copenhagen (UCPH-DERG) and the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER).
