Kalle Hirvonen is a Research Fellow at UNU-WIDER, seconded from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). Through his research, Kalle seeks to understand how to sustainably improve nutrition and food security outcomes in low-income countries. Thematically, this work sits at the intersection of development, health, and agricultural economics. He has done extensive work in areas of social protection, food security, nutrition, food value chains and food markets. Most of Kalle’s research focuses on Ethiopia and is based on statistical analyses of primary data from large-scale household surveys.
Kalle has published nearly 40 peer-reviewed articles in international journals, including top field journals such as the Journal of Development Economics and American Journal of Agricultural Economics as well as high-impact biomedical journals such as the Lancet Global Health and JAMA Pediatrics. His research has been widely cited by other scholars as well as leading media outlets, including the Economist, New York Times, Reuters, and the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE).
